This is The Daily Knight for Thursday, December 31, 2015. This episode is brought to you by GeekSwag, original geek art and paraphernalia. Check us out at Geekswag.me or our Facebook page at facebook.com/geekswagme. I’m your host, Gerardo San Diego. While we’re waiting for Star Wars to break more records this coming New Year’s weekend, let’s talk about Captain America: The Winter Soldier and other political thrillers that may or may not have superheroes in them….

Star Wars 3rd viewing, Quick Theories on Rey

  • Chewbacca making Han put on a jacket
  • She’s probably going to be Luke’s daughter
  • Too many coincidences and artifacts where she “sees” what’s happened to the Skywalker lineage
  • Voice of person that’s holding young Rey’s arm when she’s handed over sounds like Unkar Plutt
  • I can’t stop saying “Kanjiklub”–it’s not a person but the name of a gang

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

  • IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1843866/
  • I’ve seen it 4-5 times now, gets better/more intriguing every time
  • It’s poetic that the helicarriers destroyed themselves–SAME SOLUTION as in the movie Wargames (let the game beat itself up)–Natasha references to Wargames in Arnim Zola’s bunker computer room
  • Liking Bucky Barnes more, the more I see him
  • More fun to watch in retrospect, after seeing the other Marvel films
  • How believable is the Hydra infiltration of SHIELD? Compare to the Treadstone and Blackbriar corruption within the CIA in Bourne movies.
  • 1970s music! Marvin Gaye’s Troubleman soundtrack, must listen. Is this an homage to the political thrillers of the 70s?

Political Thrillers and Similarities to Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Condor-RedfordRobert Redford as the good guy being chased by the bad guy in Three Days of the Condor.

la-et-mn-captain-america-the-winter-soldier-ro-001In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Chris Evans is now the good guy, and Robert Redford is the bad guy.

Similar themes: Infiltration and Double-Crossing — A unit inside the main agency covertly does something and breaks the rules, which frame the good guy, and the good guy has to solve it and expose the inside unit to the world.

  • The Bourne Trilogy
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0440963/
Treadstone and Blackbriar working within the CIA.
  • Three Days of the Condor / Marathon Man
    • IMDB Condor: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073802/
      IMDB Marathon Man: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074860/
    • You put Max Von Sydow or Laurence Olivier as the main spook and you can’t go wrong.
    • In many of these movies, the bad guys die figuratively and literally by consuming themselves. Olivier=diamonds. Winter Soldier=helicarriers. Wargames=short circuit the simulation.
    • Obscure and kind creepy ending: Higgins asks Redford’s character, How sure are you that what you leak to the press will ever get printed?
  • All the President’s Men
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074119/
ACTUAL story of the Watergate break-in. Within the committee to re-elect Richard Nixon, they hire burglars to break into the Democratic Party headquarters in the Watergate Hotel.
