This is The Daily Knight for Tuesday, August 16, 2016. The Daily Knight supports Making Biscuits Cat Rescue, a 501c3 charity. If you like this podcast, please consider making a donation or adopting a rescue cat at makingbiscuits.org. I’m your host, Gerardo San Diego, and today I’ll be talking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, what we’ve already seen and what we can expect to see. I’ll also be talking about Star Wars news including the Rogue One trailer, and a little bit of Pokemon Go….

Star Wars News

  • RIP Kenny Baker – Mark Hamill said it best, “You WERE the droid I was looking for.”
  • Rogue One Official Trailer (reaction video)
    • Jedi temple on top of mountain
    • Forest Whitaker as Saw Guerrera – knight’s armor with neck guard on left shoulder “The world is coming undone”
    • The importance of SOUND and MUSIC to Star Wars
    • Dirty Dozen scenario–bunch of fringe-dwelling individuals united for a suicide mission (show Suicide Squad meme?)
    • Alan Tudyk as the black droid K-2SO
    • Upside down Death Star
    • Is that Death Star eclipsing a sun?
    • Ben Mendelsohn’s Orson Krennic in room with other officers about to use the Death Star’s main weapon, the superlaser. (Trivia: Kyber crystals, the same crystals used to power lightsabers, also power the Death Star’s superlaser–there are 8 Kyber crystals used in the superlaser. Also may be linked to why the Empire is interested in the winter moon Jedha, because it’s rich in Kyber deposits.)
    • Beach battle! 97.6% chance of failure!
    • Walker and rocket-propelled grenade–RPG in da face!
    • Felicity Jones and Diego Luna trying to escape planet being destroyed?
    • Jyn Erso walking toward TIE fighter! (Reminds me of scene from Oblivion movie)
    • Assault team in U-Wing belly.
    • Darth Vader!
  • Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian for the Han Solo movie?
  • International Trailer has ADDITIONAL SCENES!

Marvel Movies and Netflix Shows: An Embarrassment of Riches

  • Doctor Strange Trailer
    • Storyline based on The Oath comic book storyline?
    • Connection with Netflix’s Defenders?
    • Rated PG-13 for psychotropic violence
    • Marvel MCU’s first real foray into “magic”–sort of did it with Thor but that’s more mythological
    • Will this be Marvel’s most philosophical movie with the most gray areas between “good” and “bad”, a contrast to the more straightforward style of Captain America?
  • Captain Marvel casts Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. Origin story will be altered for the movie version. Why? To differentiate itself from Green Lantern? I think also there’s a six degrees of separation between Carol Danvers and Inhumans, which is linked to Agents of SHIELD, which isn’t working out as well as the MCU and Netflix shows.
  • Avengers: Infinity War (basically Avengers 3) will be ONE movie, not parts 1 and 2. Avengers and other good guys fight Thanos in this one and we finally get to see what the Infinity Stones are all about. First movie where Guardians of the Galaxy teams up with Avengers.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2: according to director James Gunn, trailer will be coming soon. Kurt Russell as Starlord’s dad, Ego The Living Planet (yes, Kurt Russell will play a planet, don’t ask me how). Also added are Sylvester Stallone (unknown character as of now) and Nathan Fillion as Simon Williams a.k.a. Wonder-Man, which is PERFECT!!!
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming – Starring Tom Holland (who nailed it in Civil War), Michael Keaton, Donald Glover added as cast member (character not yet known). Sony will produce but Marvel will have creative control so Spidey fits in better with the Marvel MCU (yay!) If this is successful, it may launch a SERIES of Spider-Man movies similar to the Harry Potter movies.
  • Netflix The Punisher: Jon Bernthal says that we have yet to see the REAL Punisher, and that we will see him do some real punishing in his own series! Originally slated for 2018 release, there are leaks that say it may be released in 2017.
  • Thor: Ragnarok (Thor 3) – Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban, and Mark Ruffalo. Like the killer talent in Doctor Strange, this cast could do Shakespeare without missing a beat. We’ll see Hulk wear his Planet Hulk/World War Hulk armor and there will be a ton of fighting, hopefully.
  • Black Panther – If this is anywhere near as amazing as Chadwick Boseman’s performance in Civil War, this movie will be majestic, period.
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp – This will probably continue the comedic side of the MCU that began with the first Ant-Man movie.
  • Lastly, Luke Cage Netflix trailer: fantastic, feels organic, authentic, sincere. Set in Harlem, as opposed to Hell’s Kitchen with Daredevil and Jessica Jones (in case you don’t live in/near New York, Hell’s Kitchen is south of Central Park and Harlem is north of Central Park). This is one I’m really looking forward to. Also might introduce Iron Fist. One more step to forming The Defenders.

So within the upcoming MCU and Netflix Universe movies are the prototypical superhero action movies, a psychological thriller bordering on a mind-trippy horror movie (Dr. Strange), an all-out war movie (Infinity War), an all-out rumble movie (Ragnarok), police procedurals (Daredevil and Punisher), 70’s blaxploitation (Luke Cage), one with a female lead (Cap Marvel), one for teenagers (Spidey Homecoming), and a comedy (Ant-Man and Wasp).

There have been 13 MCU movies that have been released in theaters, with 9 more coming in the next three years, IN ADDITION to the TV shows Agents of SHIELD and the Netflix shows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher.

The bottom line is Marvel has so many projects that NO ONE MOVIE will make or break their successful streak. Captain America: Civil War is arguably one of the top 5 superhero movies ever made, and it’s simply one more movie in the great narrative that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
